Tubular skylights are now becoming a common feature in many people's homes. Also referred to as a sun tube or sun tunnel, they are classified as being a tubular lighting device or TDD. They can be had in curved, straight, or jointed designs; all of which can increase the quotient of natural light entering a residential or commercial building.

They have a resemblance to other recessed lighting fixtures and would not look out of place no matter what decor is dominant in the room. It is often said that a tubular skylight is easier to install than other tubular lighting devices and in most cases would cost less. Their size also means that the heat lost in winter and the heat gained in the summer months is greatly reduced. They are highly efficient when compared to other skylights.

The basic concept involves providing a living area with indirect and diffused sunlight. As the sunlight is not entering a room directly, this results in less damage to carpets and other furnishings from UV rays. For the same reason there would be less strain on the eyes. They are also available with an integrated electrical light that can be used during times of low light or night time.

Most tubular skylights are designed with a metal frame and acrylic lens. The actual tubes are fixed into a dome which is then installed into the roofing. Most would have a form of reflective sun scoop that helps to direct the sunlight into a plastic or metal tube. This tube has a reflective coating that guides the sunlight through a diffuser lens. It is this lens that is affixed on to a room's ceiling, spreading light down and outwards into the room.

Though they are more compact then a conventional skylight, a tubular option can still disperse a respectable volume of light into any room. Research claims that a single thirteen inch tubular skylight has the same light output as a 700 watt bulb in the winter months and a 1200 incandescent watt bulb in the month of June. This is more than acceptable for any home or workplace.

How much you would have to pay for a tubular skylight would depend upon its size and quality. As a rough guide, expect to pay somewhere between one hundred and six hundred dollars for a single design. It would be wise to avoid the cheapest options as they may not have been built to the highest quality.

When it comes to choosing an installer, do as much research as you can. Never choose an installer blindly. Always seek out a company that is recommended by other people. If you were to use an inexperienced firm, then the result may be drafts and water leaks that are expensive to fix.

It is possible for anyone who has some knowledge of DIY projects to fit tubular skylights by themselves. With the cost of energy increasing every year it makes sense to integrate practices into our homes and workplaces that can cut down the amount of energy required for heating and cooling. It cannot be denied that a room brightened by natural light creates a more productive and less stressful ambiance than artificial lights.
